Schumann's Fünf Stücke im Volkston translates to English as 'five pieces in folk style', and they were composed in 1849. The five pieces emulate the style of German or Bohmeian folk music without actually using any recognised folk themes, and each contains different elements of Schumann's compositional techniques. The first is subtitled Vanitas Vanitatum "all is vanity" and has a rather mocking and unbalanced nature, while the second piece is slow and has the effect of a lullaby. The third piece is perhaps the emotional heart of the work while the fourth is the most joyous of the set. The final piece in contrast is a fierce work which contains elements of a tarentelle.
