Olivier Messiaen
Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) was a French composer and organist.
His music is often complex and unconventional, in terms of rhythm and harmony. His best known works include the enormous Turangalîla-Symphonie and the Quatuor pour la fin du temps, which he composed in 1940 in a prisoner of war camp.
He had a keen interest in ornithology, and a lot of his music features imitation birdsong. One such work is Messiaens Le Merle Noir (the blackbird) for flute and piano, accompaniment tracks for which can be found on this website, along with the Theme and Variations for violin and piano.
