Robert Schumann composed his Cello Concerto Op.129 in 1850. He gave the autographed edition the title 'Konzertstucke' (concert piece) as opposed to concerto, and the fact that the three movements are linked and played without a discernable break illustrates that he was looking to disrupt the traditional concerto form. All three movements share thematic ideas which help unify the character and emotional arc of this acclaimed work.
