Pablo de Sarasate wrote his Zigeunerweisen, Op.20 in 1878. While the piece is sometimes known as 'Gypsy Airs', suggesting themes of Romani origin, in fact they are Hungarian in nature. Nonetheless it is a favourite among violin virtuosos, written in a single movement divided into four distinct sections. Naturally the piece ends in a display of violin pyrotechnics including spiccato runs, left-hand pizzicatos, double stops and artificial harmonics.
