Odelette was one of the last pieces Saint-Saëns wrote, in 1920. It was originally composed for flute solo and orchestra, and later arranged for fute and piano. Odelette refers to a term used for a woman of the Turkish harem, and here Saint-Saëns conjures up a flavour of the exotic by using oriental modal techniques and sinuous melodic themes.
