Edwin York Bowen's first viola sonata was written in 1905, when he was just 20 years ago. It is a remarkably assured work considering it was the composer's first sonata. The first movement is expansive and lyrical, while the second is intense and full of passion. This intensity is diffused somewhat in the generally light-hearted finale, although it still has its fair share of powerful episodes.
