Ralph Vaughan-Williams composed The Lark Ascending, arguably his most famous work, in 1914 although it was not performed until 1920. He wrote the piece initially for violin and piano, before later arranging it into the more familiar orchestral version. Since the start of the Classic FM Hall of Fame in the UK, this work has featured in the top 3 every year.
