Josef Suk wrote his four pieces Op.17 in 1900, and they remain perhaps his best known composition. The first piece, Quasi Ballata, has impressionist elements and only reaches a recognised key 32 bars in, a C-sharp major section with extravagent flourishes in the piano. The second piece is a scherzo which effectively uses cross-rhythms to add dynamism, while the third piece, Un poco triste, is undoudtedly the emotional heart of the set. The explosive Burleska brings the set to a exciting and virtuosic conclusion.
