Shostakovich's first cello concerto was written in 1959 for his great friend Mstislav Rostropovich, who gave the premiere of the work. The cello opens the first movement with one of Shostakovich's best-known four-note motifs, which appears throughout the course of the whole work giving it a sense of unity. The second movement, marked Moderato, leads straight into an elaborate solo cello cadenza, which serves as the third movement of the concerto. This cadenza in turn leads straight into the technically challenging finale, marked Allegro con moto. The concerto as a whole is considered one of the most difficult works in the cello repertoire.
