Robert Schumann wrote Märchenbilder ("Fairy Tales") specifically for viola and piano in 1851, although it has since also been arranged for violin and cello. Schumann didn't provide details of which tales he was alluding to, leaving it to the performer to conjure up their own fairy-tales through music.
