Robert Schumann composed his Fantasiestücke (Fantasy Pieces) Op. 73 in 1849, originally for clarinet and piano, but it has since become equally popular as a work for cello and piano and further arrangements exist for other instruments. The first piece is marked Zart und mit Ausdruck (tender and with expression) and it has a nostalgic and dream-like atmosphere. The light and lively second movement has elements of a playful scherzo, while the third and final piece of the set is marked Rasch und mit Feuer (fast and with fire).
