Eric Satie's Trois Gymnopédies are among his most famous pieces, typical of his concise and simple originality. Gymnopédie translates in English as 'nude dance', but soloists will be reassured to learn there is no obligation to play this piece with no clothes on. Satie's music is sometimes regarded as a precursor to what is today called ambient music, emphasising atmosphere over structure. The piano accompaniment for this version is in D major (2 sharps in key signature).
