Saint-Saëns composed this work in 1887, originally for horn and small orchestra, but it has become better known in its horn and piano arrangement. The piece is in three sections within a single movement, the opening Allegro is in F minor (in the piano) while the peaceful Adagio interlude is in the relative major key of A flat. The opening theme returns to eventually shift the final section to F major, where the horn showcases its ability in a series of virtuosic passages.
