Saint-Saëns' oboe sonata was one of the last pieces he composed in 1921, the year of his death. The work was Saint-Saëns' effort to expand the somewhat neglected repertoire for the oboe, and to demonstrate its versatility. The movements are not in a standard order for a sonata, instead they increase in tempo as the sonata progresses, save for a pair of ad libitum sections in the second movement. Today the sonata holds an important place in the repertoire of many oboists.
