Felix Mendelssohn's second Cello Sonata was composed in 1842-43. It is a staple part of the cello repertoire, with exciting and dramatic outer movements where the cello sings above a virtuosic piano part. In the Adagio Mendelssohn wrote music to emulate that of JS Bach, a composer he was instrumental in re-popularising.
