Jules Massenet composed an array of incidental music for a play called Les Érynnies in 1876. Amongst these pieces was an Invocation which was later published separately as an Élégie for cello and orchestra, and it has become better known in this iteration. It is a short but richly beautiful work which extols the melodic nature of the cello, although versions for various different instrumental combinations exist. There are 2 versions provided here, one in E minor and one in D minor.
