Herbert Howells' Clarinet Sonata was written in 1951, and while it is seldom heard its considerable merits deserves a much wider audience. Howells makes use of some complex rhythms and thematic invention, which added to the work's great emotional impact make this one of the most substantial sonatas in the clarinet and piano repertoire.
