Paul Hindemith composed his Sonata for Trumpet and Piano in 1939, and it was one of his own works that he held in highest regard. The first movement is particularly virtuosic in the piano part while the trumpet has to maintain a strict sense of timing. The second movement is march-like in character, while the final movement is a funereal chorale with a resigned nature.
