Fauré's Après un Rêve was published in 1878, and later formed the first of a set of three Melodies for voice and piano. Après un Rêve has a beautiful melodic line over a harmonic series based on a circle of fifths, and has been transcribed for violin, viola or cello with piano. Only around three minutes in length, it is one of the most memorable miniatures in the classical repertoire.
