Beethoven published his eighth violin sonata in 1803, and it was dedicated to Tsar Alexander I of Russia. It exhibits Beethoven's sense of fun, the outer movements in particular have humorous touches which are almost in the style of Haydn. The whole sonata lasts around eighteen minutes and makes for an uplifting recital programme.
