Beethoven wrote his 4th violin sonata in 1801 as a companion to his much more famous 5th. It is in many ways the opposite to that sonata, in a minor key and moody. The second movement introduces some interesting fugal material while the finale bounces some ideas between the performers before settling back into its somewhat bleak mood.
